PROJECT – “THE WALL
PROJECT: “THE WALL” The Dark – At the edge of vision From 21.04.2018 to 21.06.2018 – Museo del Novecento
A truly exciting exhibition that was signed by MARCO BAZZINI inside the Museo del Novecento in Piazza Santa Maria Novella in Florence. IL BUIO is the first graphic exhibition of the project “THE WALL”, the original exhibition format conceived by the new director of the Museum, Sergio Risaliti. An easily understandable graphic model, information concepts and data on the works collected by the curator so as to suggest to the visitor new stimuli and new traces of reading. Bazzini has chosen the theme of darkness and that of art. The darkness not to be understood as absence, but rather as a common line to tell the story of art under a new point of view, to understand how artists have used or lived or depicted the darkness from the contemporaries to go back in the centuries.
Defining darkness is difficult. Is it a character, a dimension, a metaphor? A condition or rather an environment? The darkness is, however, it is declining, something certainly ambivalent. It presents itself and retracts at the same time. There is no darkness without light, darkness without clarity. Precisely because it is unattainable in its entirety, in this exhibition the darkness has been sought in works of art. A visual journey in the history of art that shows how the darkness in its constant presence – it is too often believed that only art is light – muted according to culture and time.
If the more recent artists invite to stay in the darkness, other protagonists of the twentieth century are referring to the darkness as a material for the pictorial expression or for the introspective investigation. A journey of more than 60 WORKS which, proceeding to the contrary, arrives at the nocturnal representation, a pictorial genre whose first episode is present in FLORENCE in the BARONCELLI CHAPEL of SANTA CROCE with the “ANNOUNCEMENT OF PADS OF TADDEO GADDI.

FREEDOM ‘IN ACTION.
“Creativity is the power to refuse the past, change the status quo and seek new potential. In other words, besides the use of their imagination, creativity is perhaps above all the power to act”
Ai Weiwei
From the end of this summer and until next winter, Florence becomes a destination for all those who love the Contemporary Art and Ai Weiwei, the Chinese artist, icon of the struggle for freedom of expression, and lately at the forefront for humanitarian causes and policies.
But Ai Weiwei is much more. Architect and artist, able to produce works by the great social impact, attracts and repels at the same time, because his installations always have a strong charge empathetic, whatever the theme represented. And in his case, his country is often the protagonist.
Strozzi Palace for the first time held an exhibition in the noble seat dedicating it entirely to contemporary art, and chose the most famous among its representatives. And also the most controversial and criticized. The Chinese artist AI WEIWEI, whose work has been the object of exhibition in many of the world’s leading museums.
60 works and new productions inspired specifically to the Renaissance, and the city of Florence (see 4 portraits made with Lego depicting Dante, Filippo Strozzi, Savonarola and Galileo).
His art and life philosophy are a symbol of the struggle against any kind of censorship.
For this reason, this extraordinary exhibition will charming for those who usually do not like contemporary art. The works by Ai Weiwei are beautiful to see even artistically. They have an innate elegance and are always the result of high craftsmanship work. It could not be that Florence, a city famous for the refined and precious Artisans and the Great Artists of the past, to give the great Chinese Master his first Italian Exhibition.
The exhibited works range from his years living in New York 1980s and ’90s, when he discovered his Masters: Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp, to the large iconic assemblages works from the early 2000s consisting of objects such as bicycles and stools, of political dissidents built with LEGO bricks, and his projects on migration in the Mediterranean region.
Ai Weiwei has also become a symbol of resistance against censorship. The show offers the opportunity to explore Ai Weiwei’s creative genius but also to understand his personal narrative, offering critical insight to Ai Weiwei’s ambiguous relations with his native China. Ai Weiwei denounces the inconsistencies and gaps between the individual and the community in today’s world and has a profound sense of belonging, as illustrated by his use of traditional material and techniques. Equally, a strong sense of rebellion informs his interpretations of traditional Chinese images and metaphors.

FORTE DI BELVEDERE. HUMAN. Sculptures by Antony Gormley
The “Forte di Belvedere” the spectacular open air museum of the city of Florence, home to all summer the extraordinary exhibition “Human” by British artist Antony Gormley, one of the most acclaimed sculptors if not the first, at the international level.
“Human” see together over a hundred works by Gormley in the inner rooms of the building, on the ramparts, on the steps and terraces, taking up each side of the fortress dates back to the sixteenth century with its stunning views of the city and the surrounding Tuscan hills.
Among the works on display, note the installation “Critical Mass” was originally conceived in 1995 by a former tram depot in Vienna and called an “anti-monument that evokes all the victims of the twentieth century.”
On display there are two adaptations. On the one hand, in the area east of the lower terrace, the 12 “poses” of “Critical Mass” are arranged in a linear progression, that ranges from fetal pose to that of the man who split the stars.
On the opposite side, the same bodies are placed on each other in a confused heap to represent the dark side behind every idea of human progress.
An exhibition that does not go unnoticed.

For example: the shrines, where they were used as “votes”. – The Public Spaces with the function to commemorate people and events – In House as decorative elements – but also in the Cemeteries as funerary symbols.
Monumental statues of gods, heroes and athletes (well 50 masterpieces in bronze ones) will be flanked by portraits of historical figures and sculptures in marble and stone.
Example: the Viennese Apoxyomenos bronze and the marble version from the Uffizi, used for its restoration. Or the two Apollo-Kouroi one in the Louvre and the other in Pompeii.
